Richard Grundy – Specialist Speaker on the World's Most Remote Community

Richard GrundyRichard Grundy is a geographer who has taught in many schools including over three years as Senior Teacher in St Mary’s School in the world’s most remote community of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. Inspired by this experience he gives Tristan talks, delivers Tristan Teaching Projects in primary schools, manages the Tristan da Cunha Government website and edits the Tristan da Cunha Newsletter.

Talks

Richard is a lively and experienced speaker who has addressed large and small groups, including over 700 world cruise passengers during a Tristan visit; various societies; WIs, and schools. He is able to bring his own equipment to deliver an animated Powerpoint presentation containing a unique collection of photographs which bring to life the community he talks about.

Splendid Isolation - Tristan da Cunha

A rare inside view of the extra-ordinary Tristan da Cunha Community which, in 2006, celebrated 500 years of human history. In a visually stunning presentation, Richard touches on the island's wildlife, highlights particularly important moments in its history (including the 1961 volcanic eruption and subsequent evacuation), and explains how its present community is thriving despite environmental and economic difficulties.

The talk contains many entertaining stories of Richard's experiences whilst living with one of the planet's most remarkable groups of people, including Ratting Day, rescuing a pupil from an octopus, cooking tips for penguin eggs and gathering guano and sea-birds on Nightingale Island.

What others have said ...

'All went splendidly. Do let Richard know how impressed, not only the children were but, the staff were as well.'
