Alastair Humphreys – Round the World Cyclist
Although he has a passion for canoeing, yachting and long distance running (he ran the extremely tough Marathon des Sables, finishing as one of the ten fastest Brits despite breaking his foot during the race!) for four years he cycled round the world – a trip which was awe inspiring, educational, very tough and full of adventures. Having fought off his wanderlust for a year, staying put in the UK and teaching 10-year-old boys in a school’s Special Needs department, Alastair is now preparing for SOUTH, the first unsupported return journey to the South Pole and the longest unsupported polar journey in history. Talks
2000 people have raced yachts round the globe, 1300 have scaled Everest, 450 have been into space, 200 have walked to the South Pole, 150 have rowed the Atlantic… looking for something a little more original? ‘Round the World by Bike’ is Alastair’s inspiring, funny, challenging talk about his 4-year, 46,000 mile odyssey. It provides a spectacular, original case study of self-motivation, setting small targets to achieve outrageous goals, the rewards of risk, the power of communication and trust, the magnificence of our world, and a call to arms that nothing is achieved without being bold enough to begin it. In short, an honest, funny, thought provoking talk about lessons learnt from the road! Through a fast paced, visually stunning presentation, Alastair shares his thrilling experiences with audiences of all ages through a presentation crammed with the highs and lows of this incredible trip. What others have said'With the possible exception of Sir David Attenborough,
that was the best lecture, and the longest applause, that I have heard in the past 15 years.'
