Martin Pailthorpe – TV Producer and Director
In 20 years of TV film-making, for the likes of the BBC and Discovery Channel, Martin Pailthorpe has specialised in remote and hostile testing environments, filming both the people who live there, and those who struggle to adapt! His most recent project - `Monty Halls’ Great Escape’ (BBC2) – follows Monty as he carves out a living for himself on the glorious west Coast of Scotland, creating a home in an old cattle-shed, and using it as a base from which to explore the Highlands and Islands. From Siberia at –35, to the Australian outback at over 100 degrees in the shade, from Shark Diving to 19,000 feet on Everest, and (almost, but not quite!!) to Antarctica, Martin has filmed in some of the most challenging and beautiful locations on Earth. He has thrown Ray Mears out of a Hercules into the bitter cold of a Norwegian winter, hunted Chris Ryan through the jungles of Honduras, dropped Bear Grylls through the foot thick ice of an Austrian lake, and - but for a simple spelling mistake - would have gone down in history as the man who discovered Bruce Parry! Fully illustrated with clips from his films, and photos from behind the scenes, his fascinating presentations explain how to keep the show on the road when the cameras are freezing up, the presenter is struck with potentially fatal hypothermia, the tarmac is melting under your feet, or the shark decides to take a closer interest! TalksMartin can tailor his talks to suit any age audience. Feel free to select from a pick and mix menu that includes: From One Extreme to AnotherFrom 110 degrees in Australia to minus 35 in Siberia – Martin’s 15 years travelling to the extremes with the BBC – filming bushcraft legend Ray Mears in every conceivable climate, and tracking SAS hero Chris Ryan from jungle to tundra. It’s all about Survival - Survival of people, cultures, endangered animals and – of course – film crews! Ray Mears in my Rucksack8 years of globetrotting with the man who made bushcraft sexy! How to avoid (or get out of!) trouble from Alaska to the Aussie Outback, with an emphasis on the psychology of survival that is applicable to everyone, whatever they’re doing, and wherever they’re doing it. Ray Mears’ Real Heroes of TelemarkAn oft-repeated three-part special instigated by Ray. The unbelievable but true story behind the World War II raid, why Hollywood sold the Real Heroes short, and the difficulties of trying to recreate their experiences for the camera. The Yeti HunterTravels with Joe Rohde, a Disney `Imagineer’, visiting remote Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas in search of yeti myths and sightings. And how the findings of a lifetime’s research are distilled into a three minute adrenaline rush in Florida! Perfect PredatorsEvery year, humans kill enough sharks to fill Wembley Stadium to the brim over 170 times. And yet they’re seen as a threat to us! With amazing statistics at his fingertips, (eg sharks get through over 30,000 teeth in a lifetime. In the US, you are 45 times more likely to be killed by a dog) Martin invites his audience to re-appraise sharks, showing how 400 million years of evolution has created the perfect predator. He also relates his own filming experiences, 'up close and personal' to these beautiful fish. Saving Planet EarthTo the Falkland Islands with Carol Thatcher, to find out why the albatross is endangered, and how this species might be saved. Everest – Beyond the LimitTwo seasons on Everest, with emphasis on the people and places visited en route through Tibet, the logistical difficulties of filming right up to the summit, and the ethical minefield of one of the biggest mountaineering controversies in recent years. What others have said ...'Perfect for the children who lapped it up. A great success.'
